Invicta Fighting Championships Features Coenen vs. Ruyssen

Saturday, April 28, 2012, Invicta Fighting Championships will put on its inaugural show at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, and the all-women fight promotion will look to launch with a bang featuring former Strikeforce 135lb champion Marloes Coenen (19-5-0) as she battles Romy Ruyssen (5-1-0) for a second time in the card’s main-event.

I am honored to headline Invictas first fight card, and I am looking forward to earning another win over Romy, said Coenen about her latest opportunity.

The Dutch veteran most recently appeared July 30, 2011, when she was defeated by current Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate at Strikeforce – Fedor vs. Henderson. Coenen went 3-2 under the Strikeforce banner – 2-2 in championship bouts – but was released by the promotion after a dispute between her management team and Zuffa, parent company of Strikeforce.

French competitor Romy Ruyssen has posted four consecutive victories, all by way of submission, since her defeat to Coenen in August of 2008. In six professional appearances, the bout remains Ruyssen’s only to reach the second round as the grappling specialist has finished each of her other five opponents inside the opening five minutes.

Confident in her development, Ruyssen had the following comment regarding the match-up:

Marloes is a great fighter, but she doesnt quite have the ground game that I have. I am going to take her down and finish her.

The driving influence behind Invicta Fighting Championships is said to be Shannon Knapp, promotion vice-president and former head of talent relations with Strikeforce. Knapp released the following statement in light of his latest initiative.

The time has come for a platform dedicated exclusively to building the growing womens division in our great sport. Invicta is committed to increasing the depth of the womens field and building female superstars by providing women athletes with the opportunity to compete and hone their skills on a consistent basis throughout the year.
