Saturday, November 19, 2011, former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and former Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson went to war in the main-event at UFC 139 in an effort to stake their claim as the division’s next #1 contender. The event went live from the HP Pavillion, in San Jose, California, and included a co-main event pitting former PRIDE FC champion Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva against former Strikeforce champion Cung Le.
The feature fight of the evening did not disappoint those in attendance as Henderson and Rua took their bout five rounds, making it the first non-title fight in promotion history to go all twenty-five minutes. A fast start was the key to the American’s triumph, with “Hendo” securing the unanimous decision nod on all three judge’s cards, but the final result was not without a slight helping of controversy when Rua proved convincing in his dominance over the final two frames, making an argument for a 10-8 fifth stanza.
In the co-main event, Wanderlei Silva stopped former Strikeforce champion Cung Le on second round strikes. The effort earned both competitors fight of the night honors and an extra $70 000 to pad their pockets. Shogun vs. Henderson was also named co-fight of the night and the participants were compensated $70 000 a piece accordingly.
Knockout of the night went to Michael McDonald who finished off Alex Soto just fifty-six seconds into their contest Saturday night, while “The California Kid” Uriah Faber, picked up submission of the night when he caught Brian Bowles with a second round Guillotine Choke.
