  • UFC on FOX 2 - Evans vs. Davis, Preview

Saturday, January 28, 2012, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will go live from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois for UFC on FOX 2 - Evans vs. Davis, featuring a light-heavyweight bout between #1 contender and former 205lb champion, "Suga" Rashad Evans (16-1-1), and undefeated wrestling standout, "Mr. Wonderful" Phil Davis (9-0-0).

Chael Sonnen (26-11-1, 5-4 UFC) vs. Michael Bisping (22-3, 12-3 UFC)
The evening's co-main event will see two 'villains' of the sport come to blows in an effort to achieve #1 contender status in the middleweight division.

Michael "The Count" Bisping is perhaps the Wolfslair Academy's biggest star, posting a record of 12-3 inside the octagon while putting on display an endless gas-tank and proficient kickboxing in each bout. The TUF Season 3 winner has never been closer to a title opportunity and made a solid statement in his most recent appearance when he routed opposing TUF Season 14 coach Jason "Mayhem" Miller at the season's finale this past December.

The Brit has never been particularly powerful with his strikes, but the edge he normally holds in pace allows him to accumulate damage that will break an opponent's will over time and his ability to evade submissions is commendable.

Still, it's hard to look past the wrestling chops of the Team Quest product, particularly when it is the single most impressive tool in either man's arsenal. As well, Sonnen isn't likely to tire as he too has made a career out of pushing the pace on his opposition, while his lead jab and straight punches are deceptively quick when he throws them.

This bout should boil down to one thing, whether or not Bisping can stop the takedowns of the one-time title challenger and utilize a multifaceted standup attack to score points en route to a decision. Despite claims that he'll submit the Oregon native should the fight hit the ground, Sonnen will show no regard for Bisping's Jiu Jitsu and look to bring this fight down early and often, all the while compiling points with constant ground and pound.

Rashad Evans (16-1-1, 11-1-1 UFC) vs. Phil Davis (9-0, 5-0 UFC)

"Suga" Rashad Evans has been through many ups and downs in the last couple years, but one constant has been his performance inside the cage as the Blackzilian founding-member has developed into one of the most complete fighters at 205lbs today. Now into the prime of his career, "Suga" will hope to retain the division's #1 contender spot with a win over one of the promotion's brightest young talents in "Mr. Wonderful" Phil Davis.

Phil Davis has been a work in progress thus far in his UFC tenure, but the ceiling on his potential remains as high as any, champion Jon Jones aside. In Evans, the NCAA D1 wrestling standout has his stiffest test to-date, in part, because Evans has the wrestling ability to nullify the Nittany Lion's strongest asset.

If this bout is contested primarily on the feet, Davis will need to display significant improvement and fluency in transitioning between disciplines if he hopes to put Evans on his back. The telegraphed takedown attempts that were stuffed by Nogueira will be met with greater punishment should similar shots be taken against Evans. That victory however, did showcase the heart and determination in the undefeated talent and it was without question the best win in his young career. To remain undefeated, "Mr. Wonderful" will need to be saavy, while bringing a new look and tool-set into the octagon Saturday night; with training partners like Dominick Cruz and Alexander Gustafsson, that's exactly what fans will expect to see.
